Khoranashat monastery
The monastery was founded in the 13th century by the monk Hovhannes. Preserved are S. Astvatsatsin Church, vestibule, S. Kiraki chapel, remnants of the wall, tombstones.
The main structure of the monastery, St. Astvatsatsin Church, was built in 1211-1222. It has the composition of a domed hall and at the same time differs from similar structures. The unusually wide semicircular high tabernacle of the church is divided into 14 niches.
There are different versions in different sources related to the name of Khoranashat monastery. Many associate the name with the multicolored semicircular wall of the main altar of the main church of the monastery, others with the many churches near the monastery. The complex is located 1 km northeast of Chinari village, on a forested mountain slope.
Khoranashat was the center of writing. Many of the precious manuscripts written here are kept in the Matenadaran, including the “Manuscripts of Tragedy”, “Narek”, and “Mashtots”. The manuscript of the Gospel was created in the monastery, which was supposedly written in ancient Artsakh, in Utik.
