Geography

The city is located 142 km away from Yerevan, 35 km away from Dilijan. In the area of present-day Ijevan, there were former outposts that served as the intermediate trade route from Syria and Dvin to Partav in the North Caucasus. Ijevan was interesting in terms of surroundings:  the city is surrounded by mountains covered with dense forests.

During Persian rule, the place was called Istibulagh, which means “hot spring” Persian. According to a historical source, the village of Caravansara was founded here in the 1780s.

The village of Caravansara is mentioned in the famous Russian writer Alexander Griboyedov’s “Travel Notes”, which is dedicated to his embassy mission to Persia. The first of the great Armenians, Sargis Hasan Jalalyan, spoke briefly about the Caravanserai in his work “Journey to My Greater Armenia”. Combining all the historical sources, we can conclude that as a settlement Caravanserai-Ijevan was probably founded in 1807.

Every year from 1985 to 1991, Ijevan hosted Armenian and foreign artists who lived and worked here for a month and a half. It was the International Sculpture Symposium that turned Ijevan into an open-air studio. You can see some sculptures now in Ijevan’s City Park.
